Whether it’s in your condo, home, or office, the couch is one of the most reliable and pleasant pieces of furniture. It’s great for crashing on and unwinding after a long day at work, for entertaining visitors at your home, or where guests can comfortably sit on in your office’s waiting area. As comfy as couches are, they can also be pretty challenging to clean and maintain. Here are some things you need to take note of when deep cleaning your sofa and other upholstered furniture:

Check the Type of Fabric

Unless you’re dealing with a vintage piece of furniture, Upholsteries usually have tags with codes on the type of fabric that was used to make it. General tag codes are as follows:

  • W: means water can be used to clean the item
  • S: indicates that a dry cleaning agent should be used
  • WS: both water and dry cleaning agent can be used
  • X: vacuum only

Preparation is Key

Use a clean, plain white washcloth or hand towel, or a stiff brush on the furniture. This removes or loosens any food bits as well as breaks up any dried on stains. We do not recommend using colored towels or sponges since the dyes used on this fabric may alter the color of your furniture.

Time to Go Deep

Generously apply baking powder on the entire surface of your furniture and let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes. This helps absorb unpleasant odors embedded on your couch, as well as further break any stains in the fabric. If the material allows it, you may also mix in a dry cleaning agent with the baking soda for a deeper clean.

Use the vacuum with a brush attachment to remove the baking soda and dry cleaning agent. You may also consider using a steam cleaner just to be extra thorough. Check for any persistent stains, apply your cleaning agent using a spray bottle and go over it with a clean, white rag until it’s thoroughly blotted away.

If couch’s cushion cover is machine washable, then it’s very easy to just remove the covers and throw it in the washing machine. Otherwise, just beat the cushion outdoors on a sunny day to loosen dirt and debris, while letting the UV rays act as a natural disinfectant for the fabric.
